Rev'elle Photo

Rev'elle Photo, why this choice?

It's a combination of "rêve" (meaning 'dream'), of "révéler" (to reveal), and of "elle" (she).... Because I am a woman photographer, because I am dwelling in fantastical realms, and because photography allows me to share and reveal a universe to my subject or the observer... Hoping that you enjoy this photographic journey...

Screen calibration

30/12/2013

I filmed my screen to show the difference between a calibrated screen vs non calibrated. The color on the attached picture is not ideal since this is filmed, it's very low quality, however it demonstrates the difference between the 2 screens.
The result if your screen is not calibrated is that when you'll print your photos, you'll likely get prints that will look darker and more contrasted (similar to the calibrated version) than what your screen displays (non calibrated).
One can calibrate a screen by using free softwares that can be found online however calibration in this case is done manually and is not accurate. Much better, you can buy or rent a calibration device which will automatically adjust your screen luminosity and colour accurately through a scan.
This way your screen will accurately reflect colours and luminosity and your prints will be closer to what you visualised on screen and had in your mind.

Post processing photographs

17/10/2013

All my photographs are taken in Raw format. Why : because I do not want my DSLR to decide the final result of my image. Raw format allows me to refine my image exactly the way I want it to be. Whereas with a JPEG, my DSLR would automatically apply global sharpening and saturation to it.

The other big advantage of Raw format is that it contains a lot of color and light information, it gives more details in light, shadow, and color. Post processing is thus more precise and flexible. A Raw file can easily be worked on, without impacting quality. Which is not the case of a JPEG which contains less information.

Why do I post process my photos? A Raw format is not a final file. Sharpening, colors, contrast, light and shadows need a little bit more work. It is "raw" and flat. It needs action from the photographer, such as a film would need the professional service of a lab for post processing and to get to the final image.

Post processing also allows the photographer to finalize the style and atmosphere of a photo, bring his/her own personal touch, and convey the emotion of a scene.

This is what makes the difference and therefore it is a crucial stage. It can take a bit of time, depending on the photography made, but it is worth the wait.

Once post processed, the image is saved as a JPEG for sharing and reading through other computers.

Looking for a cheap photographer

15/10/2013

I need a photographer... low budget...

Photography services can seem expensive. However often it is a lack of information on what determines a photographer rate:

-Investing in equipment: professional DSLR(s), professional lenses, flashes, tripods, softboxes, studio background, filters, memory cards and batteries, powerful computer able to manage large files, professional screen, calibrating tool, softwares, memory disks, and a number of other things... It's a real financial investment which is amortized on the long term ; however it will need to be renewed once in a while. It's difficult to compromise on equipment; quality has a cost. Consumer gear can deliver pretty photos but will never be able to deliver the quality you'll get from professional equipment.

-Time spent photographing and post processing images: a wedding day can take for instance 10 hours on the day (excl. evening). However, we need to add to this all the time spent downloading... sorting... post processing... formatting... every single photo. Post processing is a crucial stage if you want to get good quality photographs that you and your photographer will be proud of. A wedding can involve a full week post processing. A single portrait can also require hours of work (for instance a 'beauty' shot for which every pore of skin is worked on in a great level of detail). Your photographer can end up spending 10 times longer on his computer screen than photographing.

-Time spent conceptualizing and preparing the project, travel time to meet you or for the shooting.

-Overhead costs: telecommunication, website hosting, marketing, subscriptions, various supplies, shipment cost, car, insurances, etc.

-Travelling cost (trip, accommodation, meal).

-Cost for prints or photo album.

-Cost for a studio space for the photographer who has one.

-Business taxes.

Photography has a cost and this is connected to running a professional business, good equipment and quality work. Photography requires time and dedication at every stage; as well as investment. Aligning on non legal rates would thus kill your photographer activity.

For instance, in France, a wedding costs in average 1000 Euro taxes included (average which does not consider your photographer experience and popularity, nor services which are included or excluded in this rate). If we deduct let's say 60% taxes connected to running a business, and if we assume 45-50 hours work a wedding can involve in total, this leaves 8 Euro per hour, from which we then need to deduct all the above mentioned costs and investment that your photographer needs to cover. There isn't that much left for salary and living.

If we estimate the following time for a few portraits: 30 min discussing and preparing the project + 20-30 min preparing the equipment + 15-30 min travelling + 30 min-1h shooting + 20 min downloading and selecting photos + 1-2h post processing/retouching + 10 min files formating + 15 min to upload and send + 15 min to deliver the paper photographs = 4-6h of work for a few portraits only.

It's not about making money on clients. Photography is a passion and requires a lot of dedication and investment from your photographer. One needs to take into account all these costs to be able to supply and satisfy you with good quality photographs.

A visit to North Italy... A region of lakes and mountains... Followed by Venice. It's such a beautiful region and country. Churches have impressive architecture and design, including those from small villages. Venice is a magical city, very unique. Children photography

23/7/2013

Children photography can sound easy, they are so spontaneous and expressive... However the child might not want to smile to the camera, let even face the camera, even more if you are shooting for an hour or so!
Asking a child a specific pose can be a bit tricky. It can work better if the shooting is perceived as a game, it's good to leave some space to the child, let him/her express himself and do what he wants. You can also use some of his toys as photo props. All of these will help. You'll want to give some directions, but also let the child do his own things too.
Using your camera high speed will also help you capture the best moments.
Here is the result of a recent shooting.
